Nanadan (7th Dan)
Brian started training in 1974 in Kyokushinkai Karate at the Upper Hutt Karate Club, which at the time was a member club of Rembuden, a martial arts organisation established by Sensei John Jarvis in the late 1960’s.
In the last 70’s Rembuden affiliated to Sensei Morio Higaonna and the organisation started training in Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate. Brian graded for Shodan in Goju Ryu in 1980 at Sensei John Jarvis’s Rembuden Honbu Dojo in Newtown, Wellington.
All Brian’s Kyu gradings were held by Sensei John Jarvis and all Brian’s Dan gradings have been under Sensei Higaonna. Brian’s most recent grading for Nanadan (7th Dan) was in 2017 under Sensei Morio Higaonna in Okinawa, Japan.
Brian has travelled and continues to travel to train with Sensei Morio Higaonna and his senior students in Okinawa.
Brian believes Goju Ryu karate, with its wide range of skill and knowledge requirements provides a continual challenge for both beginners and experienced Karate practitioners.
